Members of the European Parliament have written to EU Commission President Ursula van der Leyen calling for the abolition of the time change to continue. The current system is outdated, according to a paper available to dpa.
Abolishing the time change is in line with the simplification of the EU, reducing unnecessary burdens on citizens and simplifying everyday life in the Union.
“Bild” newspaper reported about this earlier. More than 60 MPs from various countries and political groups signed the letter. They have requested the commission to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
What happened to the census?
The European Union Commission surveyed Europe’s citizens in 2018. A clear majority of 84 percent spoke against the change in the unrepresentative survey.
Jean-Claude Juncker, then president of the commission, announced its decision the same year. However: before it is finally sealed, EU countries will have to agree whether they prefer permanent summer or winter.
Due to lack of agreement, the issue has been pending for many years. The current Hungarian EU Council Presidency will not take the issue forward either, it confirmed when asked by dpa.
