Poland plans to temporarily suspend asylum rights

The head of the Polish government presented his new migration strategy and announced that he would “demand recognition of the decision in Europe”. He will not enforce the EU migration deal.

Poland wants to reduce illegal immigration and at least temporarily suspend the right to asylum. Donald Tusk, head of the liberal-conservative government, said it was one of the elements of his new migration strategy, the PAP news agency in Warsaw reported. “I will demand that this decision be ratified in Europe.” He did not give any details.

At a party conference of his Citizens Alliance (KO), Tusk insisted that the government should regain 100 percent control over who comes to Poland and enters the EU member state. He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko of using migrants to pressure his country. This is “against the very essence of the right to asylum”.

“We will reduce illegal immigration to Poland to a minimum,” Tusk promised. He intends to present a new migration strategy to Cabinet on Tuesday. Regarding the EU migration deal, Tusk has threatened not to respect or implement any European ideas that threaten his country’s security. He did not mention this either.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced on Thursday that Poland would tighten visa regulations. In the future, Sikorsky said, there will be no opaque means of speeding up visa issuance. The EU and NATO country is making decisions about corrupt practices in issuing visas under the former national-conservative PiS government that ruled the country from 2015 to 2023. (APA/DPA)
