VIENNA (PK) – The Presidential Conference will meet next week to prepare for the October 24th constituent assembly of the newly elected National Council. Roberta Metzola, President of the European Union Parliament, is welcomed to the House by the President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sopotka, and receives the Grand Order of Gold for services to the Republic of Austria. A meeting of the EU Main Committee is planned ahead of the European Council meeting.

Monday, October 14, 2024

The 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be held in Geneva from October 14 to 17. And focus will be on promoting science, technology and innovation for a peaceful and sustainable future. On the Austrian side, MPs Andreas Minnich (ÖVP), Christoph Mattsnetter (SPÖ), Hubert Fuchs (FPÖ) and Federal Councilor Maria Huber (Greens) will take part in the meeting.

2 pm:

European Union Parliament President Roberta Metzola arrives in Vienna and is welcomed by National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka at the Parliament. Reason for Visit: Metzola receives the Grand Decoration in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria. (Reception Room, Parliament)

The President of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka and the Association of German Old Austrian Country Teams (VLÖ) in Austria invite you to the 70th anniversary of the interest group in the House. After Sobotka’s opening remarks and a video greeting from Upper Austrian Governor Thomas Stelzer, VLÖ leader Norbert Kapeller and historian Philipp Strobl will deliver celebratory speeches. During a round of discussion, representatives of the parties represented in the National Assembly exchanged views. Words of thanks Rüdiger Stix, Federal President of the Sudeten German National Team in Austria, Gerhard Schiestl, General Secretary of the Danube Swabian Working Group in Austria, and Manfred Schuller, Federal President of the Federal Association of Transylvanian Saxons in Austria. 3:15 pm:

The parliament is the venue for the first conference of the Republic of Austria’s National Fund for Victims of National Socialism. Under the theme “Memory and Responsibility,” the conference looked at the coming to terms with National Socialism in Austria. How the commemoration can be organized in Austria in the future and what topics should be addressed will also be discussed. The commemorative year of 2025 approaches: 80 years since the end of the war and the Second Republic. National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka, chairman of the board of trustees of the Republic of Austria’s National Fund for Victims of National Socialism and the Fund for the Repair of Jewish Cemeteries in Austria, will open the conference.

The program includes discussions with internationally active memorial service providers and keynote addresses by philosopher and contemporary witness Katja Sturm-Schnabl, historian Brigitte Baylor and political scientist LK Rajal. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Oskar Deutsch, President of the Jewish Community of Vienna, Barbara Kluk, Director of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial, Suzanne Janistyn-Novak, Deputy Director of the Parliament, and Andreas Granbiter, Executive Scientific Director of the document. Austrian Resistance and Moritz Wein Archives from the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. 6:00 PM:

An exhibition on the disconnection from the lives of Austrian Jews after the Anschluss in 1938 opened at the parliament on Tuesday. International monument Yad Vashem designed the show, which will be on view until November 10. Yad Vashem President Dani Dayan will also attend the opening of the exhibition and deliver a welcome address. The opening words come from Sobotka, President of the National Council. National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka is on an official visit to Prague. There he will meet and discuss with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Czech Republic, Marketa Pekarova Adamova. (Czech Republic, Prague)
