The Austrian exclave of Kleinwalsertal in the district of Bregenz, connected to Bavaria only by road, was accessible only during the day for several weeks.
The reason is extensive renovation work on the B19, known as the Walserschanze, up to the state border in the neighboring Bavarian community of Obersdorf. There are no alternatives.
The street is open on weekends
The responsible state building authority in Kempton described the construction work as “urgently necessary”, while also indicating that the number of all-night closures could be reduced to 13 nights after discussions with construction companies. Construction started on Monday 3rd June and is scheduled to end on 12th July. Until June 20, the link to Kleinwalsertal will be closed to all traffic from Monday to Thursday from 8pm to 6am. The road is not closed on weekends. Of course, this schedule depends on weather conditions, which may lead to exceptions, according to the building authority. Depending on how the construction site progresses, there may be further overnight closures between June 24 and July 12.
Bus connections have been fixed
During the nighttime closure, the only exceptions are for emergency vehicles and emergency medical teams. The timetables of bus connections between Oberstdorf and Mittelberg and within the valley have been adjusted. The municipality of Mittelberg, which is heavily dependent on tourism, recommends visiting its website (https://gde-mittelberg.at) to inform you of current changes required before trips.
