Low pressure Anet over Italy’s northern and northeastern Balkans is also affecting southeast Bavaria’s weather, and will bring heavy, persistent rain over the weekend in the Alps and Bavarian Forest, as well as large amounts of fresh snow at higher altitudes. , floods may occur at places. Heavy snow has already begun to fall on the edge of the Alps.
Continued rain in the Alps to the Bavarian Forest
In Bavaria, according to BR meteorologist Christian Lorenz, “explosive low-pressure weather” is causing partly heavy, continuous rain until Sunday, especially in the Alps through Simgau and Rotel, the Passau region and the Bavarian Forest. Here, especially on Saturday night and Saturday morning, 40 to 60 liters per square meter is common, with up to 80 liters possible in some places.
On the eastern edge of the Upper Bavarian Alps, i.e. in the Simgau mountains, as well as in the Berchtesgadener land, up to 140 liters is possible. That means half of the normal monthly rainfall can fall here in a short period of time. Emergency services and authorities are already preparing for relevant situations in the mentioned regions.
Heavy snow falls above 1,500 meters
The snow range is usually between 1,200 meters and 1,500 meters, but during heavy rains and at night it can drop to 1,000 meters. Between 1,300m and 1,500m fresh snow may be over half a metre.
Meteorologists spoke of a “remarkable start to winter” which was “somewhat unusual” for the time of year. In the southern district of Oberalko, cleaning vehicles began their first mission of the season early in the morning. Even at the highest elevations of the Bavarian Forest, it can sometimes snow, but mostly it’s sleet here.
