“Protestant Trumpet Day” took place in Hamburg at the beginning of May.
Organized by the “Gospel Trumpet Service”, this event, held only once every eight years, is considered the world’s largest volunteer brass gathering – with enormous traction. A total of 30,000 musicians and spectators participated from May 3 to 5. SG Medientechnik entrusted technical implementation and Klingenberg Audiodesign for sound engineering planning and production.
The audio concept, designed by Tobias Klingenberg, also included the provision of audio equipment – which represented a considerable material cost for an event of this scale: “That was actually a relatively high barrier,” says Klingenberg. About six years of performance – the quality of CODA audio systems, “but thanks to the support of AVM Eventtechnik GmbH and the great support of CODA Audio Deutschland, everything worked smoothly.”
As Klingenberg says, production quality is demanding. For example, for a funeral service in a Hamburg city park, an area of 180 x 180 meters should be provided with equal sound from the center. 360-degree apps with maximum speech intelligence and live music and video feeds should be displayed at their best. “At the same time, residential areas adjacent to the city park are not allowed to be disturbed by noise emissions.”
Tricky sounds. But it’s mostly problem-free – thanks to the CODA Audio System Optimizer. “During the preliminary planning I completely relied on System Optimizer’s results,” says Klingenberg. Accurate analyzes allowed us to plan the use and configuration of the necessary materials in advance – and the calculated results proved to be absolutely correct during production: “It gives you reliable information about the behavior of the planned sound system. It’s a very useful tool.”
As a result of the calculations, the following CODA audio equipment was used: four line arrays each with 4x AiRAY 90° (for long throw), including: 8x CiRAY 90° (for midfield) and 4x CiRAY 120° (for nearfield) . “I chose this combination because the AIRAY and the new CiRAY system can be perfectly connected to each other. The components complement each other, and the energy emitted by the sound system can be efficiently distributed to the corresponding sound zones. Point is very convenient handling: “The whole system is installed and ready for two people to play in four hours. LINET offers a reliable, high-quality connection option that provides the necessary power for four LINUS T-Racks (each with 3x LINUS 14D).
Long-time CODA Audio user AVM Veranstaltungstechnik contributed a large portion of the equipment. The event service provider near Bremen was one of the first companies in Germany to invest heavily in the new CiRAY. The line array system demonstrated its outstanding properties at this open-air event: “It impresses with its excellent handling, full frequency curve and precise impulse behavior over a very long range,” says Matthias Kohl, AVM marketing boss. All of these advantages were evident on Gospel Trumpet Day, as Cole was able to judge: “Even from over 100 meters away, every word could be clearly understood.”
