Israel attacks Lebanon – and wants to save Iranian nuclear facilities

At least ten airstrikes were reported overnight in northeastern Lebanon. Bullets reportedly hit Baalbek and surrounding areas.

Israeli forces reportedly launched a series of airstrikes in northeastern Lebanon on Tuesday night. Hezbollah-affiliated TV station Al-Majadin reported that several areas in the Bekaa Valley and around the city of Baalbek were hit. Television station MTV reported at least ten airstrikes in and around Baalbek.

A burning building can be seen in the video, which is said to have come from Duris village. The Israeli military says it has repeatedly struck Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Shiite militias continue to fire rockets at Israel. According to the Israeli military, about 115 projectiles were recorded as being fired from Lebanon into Israel on Monday.

Spare Iranian nuclear facilities

The situation with Iran also remains tense, with Israel intending to focus its announced retaliatory strikes on military facilities and spare nuclear and oil facilities. The Washington Post reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the US government. Netanyahu told US President Joe Biden in a phone call on October 9.

Two weeks ago, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired about 200 ballistic missiles at the Jewish state. Israel then retaliated. An official familiar with the matter told a US newspaper that an Israeli attack on Iran would have to take place before the November 5 US election. If Israel does not respond, Iran may interpret it as a sign of weakness.

US President Biden has made it clear that he will not support an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. According to analysts, an attack on oil facilities could raise energy prices, while an attack on nuclear power plants could trigger further escalation and draw the United States into conflict. Netanyahu’s plan to attack only military facilities was met with relief in Washington. However, prominent Israeli politicians continue to push for an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. “Israel must not miss this golden opportunity to destroy Iran’s nuclear program,” he wrote on Platform X in early October.

In addition, Israel announced it would halt operations in Lebanon in the coming weeks during consultations with the United States, the newspaper said, according to an official familiar with the matter. (APA/dpa/Red.)
