According to insiders, negotiators opened fresh talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip yesterday in Cairo. Egyptian security sources said that representatives of their country and the United States initially tried to compromise on a security arrangement along the border between Egypt and Palestine.
Their proposals will now be scrutinized by Israeli and US representatives, two insiders say. Qatar’s delegation, which is also acting as a mediator, was expected to join today. According to the Israeli government, the heads of the Israeli secret services are negotiating a ceasefire in the war with the terrorist organization Hamas in Cairo.
US ambassador: deal “in sight”
According to Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations, a ceasefire and a hostage agreement are nearing. A deal to that effect is “now in sight,” he told the UN Security Council. He urged the 15-member group to persuade Hamas to accept a proposal.
“This is an important moment for the ceasefire talks and for the region,” he said. “Therefore, each member of this Council must continue to send strong signals to other actors in the region to encourage actions that lead us away from an agreement.”
