7. Video or just picture
An important decision is between still and moving images. Do you like taking photos or videos too? Many cameras offer both functions as standard. If you want to take high-quality photos, you need to make sure that the camera has a good sensor. If photos are interpolated, i.e. existing pixels are enlarged, this can lead to blurry photos. Good video resolution is also important. If you can make a test video before you buy, you'll want to make sure the footage doesn't drag. If it's shaky, it won't capture enough frames per second to play a smooth video image. Time-lapse recordings are also exciting and can provide a quick overview. A microphone should also be integrated for live recordings.
8. Data Transfer
Wildlife camera data can be backed up to a memory card. Only a few models have the ability to transfer photos or videos over Wi-Fi. Most devices have a microSD slot, some even allow CF cards. In many cases, data can be transferred via a USB-C cable. If you want to mount the device in a tree, you should make sure that a suitable strap or holder is included in the scope of delivery.
9. Weatherproofing
The camera must be strong enough to withstand animals and all weather conditions. You should also make sure that the device is waterproof or has a small roof for protection. Most models today are protected against dust and splash water according to IP66. It is also important that the camera still works even in extreme temperatures. -20 to +60°C is recommended.
