Reed receives prestigious 'Solids Handling Award'

London, England -- Prof. Alan Reed of the University of Greenwich has been presented with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' Bulk Materials Handling Committee's prestigious Solids Handling Award, recognizing his valuable contribution to the powder and bulk handling and processing sector.

Currently Director of Regional Liaison (Kent and Medway) and Professor, Medway School of Engineering at the University of Greenwich, his long and illustrious career has been strongly associated at all stages with research projects that are directly beneficial to industry, working with a long list of industrial partners over the years.

In 1989 he was instrumental in establishing the Wolfson center for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, attracting financial support from the Wolfson Foundation and developing it into one of the world's leading research groups in its field. In excess of £3m of external funding has been attracted to undertake research from organizations such as the EPSRC, DTI, Department of Energy, the Wolfson Foundation, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, HEFCE, PCFC and NAB, as well as industry.

One of the largest assignments that Prof Reed has been involved in to date is the £1.4m EPSRC funded Quality in Particulate Manufacturing (QPM) project, initiated to develop techniques to preserve the quality of particulate materials, such as cornflakes, muesli and sugars, during manufacturing processes. Carried out in association with the center of Numerical Modeling and Process Analysis, University of Greenwich and Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Surrey, the project attracted an additional £1m of funding from industrial partners that included GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, Tate and Lyle, United Biscuits, Borax Europe and Morgan.

Particulate handling technology developed during the project has already helped one UK-based multinational pharmaceutical company to cut manufacturing losses by £1m at a new processing plant. QPM is designed to effectively reduce problems that can occur, such as lumping, breakage and separation, when handling particulate materials. Greenwich University's Wolfson center for Bulk Solids Handling Technology has also been highly commended for its work at an IChemE awards ceremony for innovation.

BulkEurope 2008 - Prague, Czech Republic

Wuerzburg, Germany -- September 11th and 12th 2008 will see the second edition of BulkEurope to take place in Prague, Czech Republic. This event aims at bridging the gap between academia and industry by providing a forum where new ideas, concepts, methods and technologies are shared and exchanged between academic institutions, engineering and consultancy companies and end users of bulk material handling, transporting and storing systems.

The conference program covers all topics dealing with the storing, handling and transporting bulk – from silo control and emptying, pneumatic, mechanical and belt conveying to heating and drying processes including technologies, methods and measures used to reduce the generation of dust, spillage and noise, as well as safety aspects.

The International Conference & Exhibition BulkEurope 2008 will provide a forum for scientific knowledge exchange as well as for making new business contacts.

Visit the exhibition co-located with the conference and keep yourself up-to-date with the latest developments in the field of bulk solids handling, make new contacts and refresh the old ones!

New Martin 'Six Shooter' Air Cannon System

Neponset, IL -- Martin Engineering, the world leader in air cannon systems, has introduced the new Martin® Six Shooter™ Air Cannon System, a patent-pending system with integral controls that allows one air cannon to supply powerful blasts to improve material flow at up to six points in a vessel.

Air cannons provide a powerful blast of air to improve the flow of bulk materials through storage and process vessels. Applications include the recovery of solids from storage bins and silos and the elimination of buildups in cement plant preheater towers.

The Martin Six Shooter Air Cannon System uses double braided stainless steel hoses to reach up to six discharge ports from a central location. By serving multiple outlets from one air reservoir, the Martin Six Shooter System is ideal for installations where multiple discharge points are located in close proximity.

By separating the air cannon from the discharge points, the Martin Six Shooter System shelters its working components from dust, gases, and high temperature conditions, making it a wise choice for high-temperature, high-dust, high-stress applications.

With a number of discharge points served from one air reservoir, the Martin Six Shooter System simplifies installation and maintenance procedures, and improves worker safety. Martin Engineering also offers “turnkey” installation for all its air cannon systems.

Founded in 1944, Martin Engineering is the world leader in making bulk materials handling cleaner, safer, and more productive. Martin Engineering technologies control dust and spillage from belt conveyors and promote the movement of bulk solids from storage and through industrial processes.

Cooling Rhenium with Screw Heat Exchanger

Drunen, The Netherlands -- Recently, °Celsius delivered a screw heat exchanger to a client in Belgium which cools down more than 2.000 kg Rhenium per hour which is coming out of an incinerator from 850 °C to 150 °C.

The cooling is required because the hot Rhenium can not be handled at the high temperature. Rhenium is a raw material which is added to all kinds of chemical processes in the metal industry in order to add certain improving attributes to the metal to be produced, for instance, durability.

The °Celsius screw heat exchanger consists of a large double-axis screw conveyor with hollow blades, whereby each screw has a diameter of more than 800 mm. The length of each screw is more than 8 meter and both the blades, the screw-axis and the body are cooled by means of cooling water with a temperature of > 20 °C.

Because the production process is in production 24 hours a day/seven days a week/50 weeks per year, production reliability has been an absolute requirement of the client and with the design °Celsius has tried to eliminate all potential risks of failure.

°Celsius is the sister company of the famous company Van Beek Schroeftransport, which has been producing screw conveyors since 1939. Based on its experience of many years °Celsius has established itself in 2002 as an independent and specialist unit for the development and realization of thermal screws.

Mr. Singh wants help with unloading of iron ore wagons:

I have an issue with unloading of wagons in the track hoppers in my plant. The track hoppers are used for unloading of coarse iron ores as well as fines. Now the entire operation is manually done and a lot of unsafe actions are being done.

Is there a system present which completely eliminates manual intervention and is there any way to get rid of the door jamming problem due to clogging of iron ores in the hinges of doors of the wagons.   (to post reply, click here)

Ms. Sacharo needs help with fluidization testing:

I am sitting in West Australia Perth and need to make some fluidization tests. Very easy, simple standard stuff. I just wanted to put material in a fluidization tube switch the air on and see what happens.

My problem is, that I don't have here a fluidization tube. So I just wonder if there is a company in Australia, where I could buy such fluidization testing equipment or may be even a company around Perth, which could do this kind of testing?  (to post reply, click here)
