Dr.
McGee wins Innovation Award from IMechE
Bolton,
UK -- Dr Eddie McGee, technical director, Ajax Equipment,
has received the Institution of Mechanical Engineers'
prestigious 'Bulk Materials Award for Innovation' for his
work on predicting the flow of bulk solids in manufacturing
processes.
Problems with bulk materials flow
are all too common in many industries. These arise from the
tendency of bulk solids to cause blockages, stick, and flow
erratically, leading to storage capacity shortfalls,
production interruptions, quality and safety issues.
Dr McGee's work gives engineers a
predictive tool with which to avoid these flow problems. The
technique has been successfully applied to provide trouble
free storage hopper and feeder designs in pharmaceutical,
food and chemical manufacture, which achieve reliable and
consistent materials flow.
Briefly, Dr McGee's technique
maximizes the predictive value of standard bulk materials
tests for bulk density, shear strength and wall friction.
Using these properties and the container wall angle, outlet
size, and the ratio of loose to compacted bulk density, the
six parameters are plotted on a 'spider' diagram to produce
a fuller 'picture' of the materials flow characteristics.
Based on this spider diagram, engineers are able to design
hoppers and silos that are more sympathetic to the
particular material's flow properties, thus avoiding flow
problems.
In presenting the 'Bulk Materials
Award for Innovation' John Pethulis, chairman of the
IMechE's Bulk Materials Handling Committee said, “Dr McGee's
spider diagram is a useful approach which integrates the
flow related characteristics of bulk solids and a
significant contribution to tackling the problem of
characterizing the many materials handled in industry.”
“I am delighted to receive the
IMechE's 'Bulk Materials Award for Innovation' and thank
John Pethulis for his kind words. The Institution is
renowned throughout the world for the highest quality and
professional standards in engineering and it is real honor
to receive this award. The Bulk Materials Handling Committee
is particularly active in promoting the latest technical and
engineering advancements in storage, handling and processing
across the Chemical, Power, Food, Minerals, Plastics, and
Pharmaceutical Industries. I hope the spider diagram
approach can give mechanical and process engineers the
insights they need to avoid bulk materials flow problems and
achieve trouble-free hopper discharge,” Dr Eddie McGee
noted.

Minox/Elcan Toll Processing
Facility
Mamaroneck,
NY -- Minox/Elcan has opened a unique toll processing
facility. Their screening capability affords many customers
the option of sending any quantity of material to be
separated on either the Kroosher Multi-Frequency Screener or
the Minox Tumbler Screener.
The
toll processing facility can assist customers with testing
and developing new products in our lab. We also provide cost
effective processing of low volume or difficult to produce
products. Kroosh and Minox technology can separate complex
materials such as very fine powders, sticky products, and
delicate agglomerates and yield more than most conventional
screeners with the ability of screening down to 10 micron.
Tolling is another opportunity for customers to achieve
success without being capital committed. For more
information, please do not hesitate to contact us at (914)
381-7500.
Since
1985, Elcan Industries has worked with customers to find and
implement advanced screening solutions. The primary
technology utilized to improve screening performance over
traditional vibratory screening machines was Minox Tumbler
Screeners. Elcan Industries has served many different
markets and continues to excel as the experts in screening
technology. We succeed where other traditional screeners
fail or have difficulty processing.

Endress+Hauser mourns loss of
Company Founder
Reinach,
Switzerland -- The Endress+Hauser Group is mourning their
founder Dr Georg H Endress. The entrepreneur died on 14
December 2008 after a brief, grave illness a few weeks
before his 85th birthday, surrounded by his family in
Arlesheim, Switzerland.
Employees of the family-owned
Group around the world reacted with sorrow at the news.
Their deepest sympathies are conveyed to his wife Alice
Endress-Vogt and the couple's large family. As an
entrepreneur and patron, Georg H Endress leaves a thriving
work, distinguished by its farsightedness and courage,
transcending borders in many respects.
The core of Georg H Endress
life's work is the establishment of the Endress+Hauser
Group. From small beginnings, the Group developed into an
international company for industrial measurement and
automation engineering with over 8,300 employees worldwide.
"I wanted to prove to myself, my family and the world that I
could carry an idea through to success,”
He once stated in reply to the
question of why he became an entrepreneur. And with his
unique sense of humor, he added: "When we were expecting our
third child, my wife challenged me to do something - so I
became an entrepreneur."
Georg Endress was born in
Freiburg, Germany, on 9 January 1924. His father was the
director of a factory there. Seven years later the family
moved to Zagreb, Croatia, where Georg H Endress started
school. He completed further schooling in Basel,
Switzerland. He took an apprenticeship as a mechanic and
finally studied engineering in Zurich. After working for
several companies in Switzerland, Endress moved to England,
to a company which manufactured a new type of electronic
level measurement device.

Mr. Barrett wants to load trucks
with cement, accurately:
I am working on selecting a
new scale system for loading cement (powder). I need
to select a scale length needed to minimize backing the
trucks up to get a final weight or after getting a tare
weight.
My question is, are there any
standards in dry bulk trailer hatch and discharge locations
or dimensions with respect to axles? I want to select
a scale and position that will be effective for different
trailers.
