Martin Sprocket acquires CCI
Conveyors
Charlotte,
NC -- The credit crunch prompted Bill Harvey to consider
selling his Albemarle manufacturing operation to a Texas
company.
Then
he learned the company interested in his CCI Conveyor
Pulleys has a long history of growing their acquisitions. So
his answer was “yes” to Martin Sprocket & Gear Inc. On Dec.
9, Martin Sprocket bought CCI for an undisclosed price.
Harvey became vice president of Martin’s conveyor division.
Growth
now seems very much in the cards for the 100-employee CCI
plant, located on Bethany Road on the north side of
Albemarle, NC.
“The
businesses that they have purchased have grown by at least
double,” Harvey says. Martin Sprocket already operates a
sales and distribution center near Charlotte/Douglas
International Airport.
“CCI
will continue its history of strong growth and investment in
our community,” says Kevin Gullette, executive director of
the Stanly County Economic Development Commission.

Free Paper : Controlling of
Spray Drying Process
Malvern,
UK -- New pilot-scale research in the Pharmacy Department of
the National University of Singapore is demonstrating the
value of the Insitec in-line particle size analyzer from
Malvern Instruments, for monitoring and control of spray
drying processes.
Process Analytical Technology
(PAT) options, such as the Insitec, are used increasingly in
the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry at the pilot plant
stage to enable Quality by Design. Here the analyzer was
installed to monitor the performance of a spray drier
producing oil-loaded microspheres in the size range 10 – 35
microns.
Spray-drying is a technique that
is commonly used by the industry to modify product
properties. The particle size of the resulting material is
typically a key performance variable, routinely measured by
off-line analysis. The microspheres produced by Professor
Heng’s research group, in this study, were oily, and prone
to agglomeration, making measurement challenging.
Using the Insitec laser
diffraction in-line continuous analyzer, the complete
product stream was measured, optimizing the statistical
relevance of the data. Produced in real time, the
measurement data provided insight into the process dynamics
allowing, for example, start-up time to be accurately
determined, so that no in-specification material was wasted.
The research team found the
technique hugely preferable to light microscopy, which
although useful for off-line measurement, is tedious and
time-consuming, and ill-suited to the process environment.
Insitec technology can be used
at-, in- or on-line to measure both wet and dry systems
containing particles in the size range 0.1 to 1000 microns.
At- and on-line analyses both provide the opportunity for
sample treatment, prior to measurement, which can be
especially valuable for the accurate characterization of
materials that are prone to agglomeration.
Data acquisition rates are as
high as four complete measurements per second, so the
analyzer can monitor even the most rapidly changing
processes. The real-time measurements produced are ideal for
monitoring, and for the automated control, of a wide range
of processes.

Mr. Aviles wants help with
conveying fly ash:
II would like your advise
conveying dry fly-ash with screw conveyors, bucket elevator
and airslides. We are deciding between dense phase
pneumatic conveying and mechanical conveying with the
equipment.
Process will be: extract the
fly ash from a silo using a dosing valve, then convey it
with screw conveyors to a bucket elevator and then with
airslides to a mixer bin.
The data is:
1. The fly ash will be received either by ships or by trucks
to be stored in a silo and then send the material to a
mixer.
2. Material to handle: Fly Ash (non toxic, environmentally
benign, not hazardous, contains chromium VI)
3. Type to be used: 450-S (Special fineness for blending
only)
4. Density for this type: from 0.8 to 1 t/m3 (density of fly
ash aerated: 0.5 t/m3 approx.)
5. Technically dry but typically around 0.2 % moisture
content.
6. Operation capacity: 50 tph
8. Design capacity: 75 tph
I appreciate your comments.
